My grandfather, or "Papa" as I (and my siblings and cousins) called him, was truly the best man I have ever met. He was vivaciously intelligent, witty, and kind and lived quite a simple life. This is an ode to Papa, and some of the lessons he taught me.

Grammar Police
Yep, Papa was the grammar police. He taught me that not only should you always use good written grammar, but it counts just as much or more that you use good grammar verbally. Any time I would say, "Me and my friends", he would correct me automatically. He was ruthless, but he had a point. In the professional world, it is unacceptable when one is grammatically incorrect. He taught me to always check myself so that I speak and communicate properly in the workplace and in front of authority figures.
Grace
Grace was a term Papa used often. To give others grace and to forgive others for their mistakes. Holding a grudge does nothing. He wanted everyone to learn to love and forgive with grace. He didn't use the dictionary definition of grace, but rather the biblical definition. In Christian terms, grace can be generally defined as “God’s favor toward the unworthy” or “God’s benevolence to the undeserving.” In His grace, God is willing to forgive us and bless us, despite the fact that we fall short of living righteously. Papa lived by this every day of his life.
Nature
Papa was a big fan of sitting out in the sun and enjoying the nature and wildlife around him. He enjoyed the little things and relished the world that was created from above. He taught his grandkids about all kinds of birds and wildlife and was constantly on the lookout. He truly lived his life to the fullest, in an undoubtedly facile way.
Firm Handshake... Even Tighter Hugs
Papa was a gentleman, to say the least, but we knew that already. He taught us that a firm handshake was key to a solid foundation for making a good first impression. Not only were his handshakes tight, but also his hugs. He made everyone feel so important and loved with his hugs, and it was as if nothing else in the world mattered.
Papa was a good man - kind, thoughtful, and gentle. That he was taken from us so soon is painful for those left behind. He'll forever be missed and remembered. Let these few lessons and values he lived by stay in our hearts and continue to spread to others.
